Jones Named Young Retailer of the Year for 2013
Meagan McCoy Jones, Vice President Field Support of McCoy’s Building Supply in San Marcos, Tex. was recently named one of the hardware industry’s eight 2013 Young Retailer of the Year Award recipients by the North American Retail Hardware Association (NRHA).
The award, established to identify and promote the next generation of aspiring independent home improvement retailers, recognizes individual achievement by industry retailers 35 years and younger throughout the United States and Canada. Selected from different retail categories, winners are chosen based on a number of criteria including professional activities and highlights in areas such as career and community involvement, hardware industry education and extracurricular activities.
As a fourth-generation executive, McCoy Jones grew up hearing stories about her family’s building supplies business and then watching it develop into a very large regional corporation where she wears a 10-gallon hat. As Vice President of Field Support, McCoy Jones is positioned to lead the company’s legacy of customer loyalty into the future. “I feel very made to be doing what I am doing,” she says. “I have nine other cousins and a brother all exposed to the business, but I am the only one of my generation actively participating in the company,” she continued.
After a year spent as an Assistant Store Manager of the Manchaca, Tex. store, McCoy Jones transitioned to the business’ headquarters team in August of 2008, where she was promoted to Director of Field Support. Three years later she was once again promoted, this time to the position of Vice President of Field Support. McCoy Jones is quick to acknowledge other employees who have assisted in her achievements. “I worked with two great men, Andy Dobbins in our Georgetown location, and Rob Perrone who manages our Austin store who were excellent mentors and helped me get the experience I needed to excel, “ she explained.
With McCoy Jones’ continued determination and steady leadership, McCoy’s Building Supply continues to thrive. Today the business has evolved from a one-store operation in Galveston, Tex., to an expansive operation with 84 stores throughout Texas, Arkansas, New Mexico, Mississippi and Oklahoma with annual sales in excess of $600 million. “The future looks bright and I am looking at the next five to ten years of the company – how do we have the best technology in the industry? We are good, but we could be awesome,” McCoy Jones states. “That’s what I love about this industry – regardless of your background and education, if you’re smart and motivated, you can make a great living,” she continued.
“Year after year the program has continued to gain notoriety and prestige. Manufacturers, Retailers and Wholesalers all anticipate the selection and celebration of the extraordinary accomplishments of the honorees,” comments Bill Lee, NRHA President and CEO. “This is a very influential honor given within the hardware industry, and we know that Meagan McCoy Jones is extremely talented and a true credit to our industry,” he continued.
The Young Retailer of the Year awards recognition banquet will be held Monday, May 6, 2013, at the Renaissance Las Vegas Hotel prior to the opening of the National Hardware Show®. For more information on the awards program, winners and show, please visit: http://www.nrha.org.
